A small-scale solar farm has been proposed for a Millicent property with plans to tap into the grid through a neighbouring substation.
Adelaide-based Nowa Energia’s application to develop a 4.95mw solar farm is currently out for public consultation.
The land, owned by Robert and Kaye White, abuts the Snuggery Substation linking power via Electranet and SA Power Networks to much of the South East.
A 27-page report authored by Catherine Lyon from Frank Brennan Consulting Services detailed the proposed Solar Photovoltaic (PV) farm, concluding its construction was an appropriate use if the land fronting Jennings Road and the Princes Highway.
“The south-eastern portion of the allotment is proposed to be utilised for the solar farm which has an area of 12.06 hectares,” the report reads.
“Solar PV farms use the same technology that has become abundant on the roof tops of Australian homes and businesses, but with the solar panels mounted on a light steel structures fixed to the ground.
“The solar farm will connect directly to the national electricity grid via the existing overhead cabling supplied from the Snuggery Sub-station.”
The Mayurra Rd address is situated around 9km from Millicent and 5km from Tantanoola, nearby the Kimberly Clark Millicent Mill, Roundwood Solution timber treatment plant and Blue Lake Dairy powdered milk processing facility.
The report highlights the benefits of solar PV farms as their low visual impact, rising only a few metres off the ground, no operational environmental impact and ability to produce energy during most daylight hours, balancing the significant energy used for cooling in Australia.
The development would also include the construction of a small switch room substation within the solar farm footprint area which would be fenced off for safety and security of the panels.
Wattle Range Council is yet to grant planning consent with the application open for public feedback until July 30.
