A small country community devastated by the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires has had a vital asset restored with the recent opening of a new community precinct.

The community of Keilira, a small locality located n the Kingston District Council, was one of many regions devastated during the bushfires four years ago.

The new precinct provides an integral hub for the Keilira community – an asset lost during the 2019-20 bushfires.

The development was funded by a $265,000 federal grant, which helped create a meeting space, clubhouse, improvements to sporting facilities, site beautification and safety improvements with the Keilira community.

Often referred to as the ‘forgotten fire’, the Keilira blaze was started by dry lightning on the morning of December 30, 2019, and burnt through 25,000 hectares, destroying three homes, hundreds of kilometres of fencing and killed 3000 sheep and 400 head of cattle.

Barker MP Tony Pasin said “the 2019-20 bushfires were unprecedented and devastated local communities, including Keilira”.

“It may not have received the national or international attention of fires like Kangaroo Island but the impact of the Keilira fire on the local community in 2019 was equally as devastating.”

Mr Pasin joined the Keilira community at the weekend to celebrate the completion and opening of the new precinct.

“I congratulate the Kingston District Council for the support they gave the local Keilira community during and following the fire event and for managing this fantastic project which has upgraded facilities for the local CFS and created a cohesive and welcoming community hub,” Mr Pasin said.

The Kingston District Council received more than $400,000 in total funding from the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant Program.
