Mount Gambier teens in first court appearance after allegedly stealing car and petrol and winding up in Coonalpyn

A pair of Mount Gambier teens who allegedly stole a car and crashed into a tree nearly 300km away have made their first court appearance.

Two Mount Gambier teenagers accused of going on a wild 275km joyride last month that ended with them crashing a stolen car into a tree had made their first appearance in court.

The Mount Gambier boys aged 13 and 15, are facing charges of using a motor vehicle without consent and making off without payment.

The 15-year-old is also charged with failing to comply with a bail agreement, while the 13-year-old is additionally charged with unlawful possession.

The two appeared before the Mount Gambier Magistrates Youth Court Monday afternoon, supported by their families, for a brief hearing.

Police have previously said patrols were called to Poyntz Tce in Coonalpyn about 8:30am on March 14 after reports a Mitsubishi ASX had crashed into a tree.

When they arrived at the scene, two teenagers ran from the vehicle but were quickly located and arrested.

Checks then revealed the Mitsubishi had been stolen from a home in Mount Gambier, about 275km away, sometime between Wednesday and Thursday.

Police also linked the vehicle to a petrol drive-off from a service station in Keith from Mount Gambier about an hour before the crash.

On Monday, the court heard the 15-year-old had another matter in progress before the Youth Court in another jurisdiction.

The Magistrate adjourned proceedings to allow both matters to be heard before Mount Gambier Youth Court.

The teenagers were again bailed and will next appear in court in May.
