Mount Gambier mother terrified after strange man’s voice comes on baby monitor

A distraught mother has binned her baby monitor after she heard a strange man’s voice coming through it, telling her three-year-old to “open the door”.

A Mount Gambier mother has been left terrified after she overheard a male stranger talking to her young daughter through the family’s baby monitor.

Casey Ebel said she heard her three-year-old daughter Maicey wake about 10:30pm on Sunday and realised something was wrong when she checked the family’s baby monitor.

“She was talking and I thought that was a bit odd,” Ms Ebel said.

“Then I looked at the monitor and she was looking up and I thought that was weird (behaviour) for her. And then she was like ‘what?’ and I said, ‘what’s going on?’

“She put her hands up to cover her ears and started crying and screaming for me so I went running to her.

“As I was almost in her bedroom door I heard a man’s voice come from the monitor, I couldn’t make out exactly what it said but it was ‘something, something door’.”

“She was crying and so unsettled so I took her my room, her dad went outside and couldn’t see anything.”

Ms Ebel said Maicey told her the man on the monitor was telling her to “open the door”.

Maicey’s dad immediately checked outside the house but found no one on their property.

“We have cameras out the front and there was no motion on those and Maicey’s dad couldn’t see anything out the back but it’s still a very uneasy feeling,” Ms Ebel said.

“I didn’t sleep at all … I was on edge all night.”

Last year, SA influencers Poppy Radbone and her partner Jay Nichaloff said their baby monitor had been hacked and a man had spoken through it to their one-year-old daughter Blossom.

Ms Ebel said the family called the police but were told there wasn’t much they could do.

“They said to lock all the doors and if anything comes from it to ring them back,” Ms Ebel said. “They said it’s impossible to trace.”

She said after the call she went straight into Maicey’s room and unplugged the monitor.

“It’s in the bin now because I’m not having that in my house.”

Ms Ebel said the family has had the digital wireless video baby monitor manufactured by Uniden for more than four years.

She said Maicey had previously woken scared saying “the man was talking”.

“About a month ago Maicey woke up unsettled and was terrified of something; she said she didn’t like her room anymore and she was scared,” Ms Ebel said.

“So I took her into my room and she told me ‘the man was talking’ but I just thought it was a nightmare because what other explanation would there have been?”

Ms Ebel said she’s been in touch with Uniden but the company called her claim “impossible”.

“They’ve said it’s impossible for that to happen but I’ve told them it did, I heard it myself and I’m not making it up.”

The company has been contacted for comment.

With the ordeal leaving her too shaken to leave the house the next day, Ms Ebel is warning other parents to be wary.

“If I can save at least one family from the stress and heartbreak from this happening then my job here is done,” she said.

“It’s like something out of a movie, never in a million years did I think something like this would happen to me.”
