John Kakule jailed for seven years for raping a woman in Mount Gambier

A married father was told he has shown no remorse for raping a woman in a horrific attack only days after promising he’d never do it again.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A dental technician who raped a woman in a horrific attack days after promising he’d never do it again will have a long time to think about his actions behind bars.

John Kakule, 46, was jailed for seven years after showing no remorse for his vile sexual assaults.

During sentencing, the court heard the victim relied on Kakule to help her in Mount Gambier.

“You had made a number of sexual advances towards her which she had rejected,” Judge Joanne Tracey said during sentencing.

Kakule drove the woman to a secluded area in 2019 and attempted to have sex with her without her consent.

The court heard the woman tried to call triple-0 but Kakule apologised to her and said he’d never do it again.

A couple of days later Kakule and the woman were at his house, when he started kissing and touching her.

“She ran from you and crawled under a table to try and get away,” Judge Tracey said.

Kakule pinned the victim’s arms behind her, pushed her down and raped her.

During Kakule’s trial the court heard he called the victim after the rape and said something similar to “I’m sorry, forgive me”.

“He told her he didn’t want to go to jail and he offered to buy her a car and teach her to drive if she told the police that they were boyfriend and girlfriend,” the prosecutor said.

Kakule was found guilty by a jury in the District Court in August of assault with intent to rape, indecent assault and rape.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court by the prosecutor in October.

The victim said she lost her relationship with her only family member in Australia because he chose to believe Kakule’s lies over her.

“I know in John’s heart he knows what he did – he is too ashamed to speak the truth,” she wrote.

The victim said Kakule had forced her out of her local community due to the shame she felt.

“I don’t want any more lifts, I don’t want this to happen again,” she said.

“I will always feel shame even though this is not my fault … he took advantage of me.”

The court heard Kakule, who was a married father-of-seven, was working as a dental technician before being taken into custody.

Judge Tracey said Kakule had shown no remorse for the offending and still denied the rape, saying the sex was consensual.

Kakule’s counsel told the court last month he would be appealing his conviction.

Judge Tracey sentenced Kakule to seven years jail, with a non-parole period of three years and ten months.

The sentence was backdated to August 22.
