Blair Ormsby allegedly robbed a Pooraka service station with a box cutter

A drugged-up concreter who lost his wallet on night out allegedly robbed a service station with a box cutter and told the employee he would pay them back.

The Ripple Effect – Drugs

A man in a drug-fuelled daze allegedly robbed a service station employee with a box cutter, before promising to pay him back.

Blair Noel Ormsby, 46, applied for bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, after he lost his wallet on a night out and allegedly decided to “borrow” money.

A police prosecutor said they were opposed to anything less than home detention bail.

The court heard an employee of a Pooraka service station saw Ormsby enter the store on Saturday morning, just before 7am.

“He (Ormsby) waited for other customers to leave the store before approaching the staff member and stated ‘I have no money, I’m gonna need some’,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Ormsby was allegedly holding a box cutter in his right hand.

“He states the defendant said ‘don’t worry, I’ll pay you back’ and proceeded to grab money from the till,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Ormsby was arrested by police at the scene.

“He stated he did not rob the service station … while he has some memory of the events that night and morning – due to excessive drug use – times and locations of his actions are unknown,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Ormsby told police he used the boxcutter for work.

“He stated he had no idea why he was holding it and maybe he was just playing with it innocently,” the police prosecutor said.

“He states that he doesn’t remember a large portion of the night.”

Ormsby, of Hectorville, is charged with aggravated robbery. He is yet to enter any plea.

Counsel, for Ormsby, told the court that Ormsby worked full time as a concreter.

“It’s a most unusual set of facts,” Mr Lloyd said.

“He believed he was certainly borrowing the money.”

Magistrate Nick Alexandrides asked why Ormsby needed to “borrow” the money if he was in full time employment.

“He was wandering around the streets, he lost his wallet – he had no money on him,” Mr Lloyd replied.

“He’s got plenty of money in the bank but he was out and he was quite clearly affected by drugs.”

Mr Alexandrides ordered a home detention report and adjourned the application until Friday.
