The Birkenhead Bridge has reopened after motorists were redirected for three hours following a mechanical issue.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport issued a warning about 10am on Sunday morning advising motorists to avoid the bridge and find an alternate route.

It is understood a mechanical issue caused the bridge, which runs over the Port River, to become stuck while fully drawn up.

The bridge works to connect motorists from Semaphore Rd at Birkenhead to North Pde at Port Adelaide.
