A man is lucky to be alive after spending 24 hours stuck down a 25m mine shaft in Coober Pedy.
The Riverland man, 47, was first reported missing by his wife to Coober Pedy Police on Friday night, according to 9News.
It was not until about 8pm on Saturday that a search party heard his screams for help.
A team of 16, including local Mine Rescue Squad and volunteers from the Cooper Pedy CFS rescued the man from a mine shaft at Nine Mile opal field.
After a hefty three-hour rescue effort, the man was taken to the Coober Pedy Hospital before being transferred by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
He is understood to be in a stable condition and receiving treatment for a dislocated shoulder and fractured leg.
“I was quite surprised considering there was reports it was a 90ft mine shaft that's quite a long distance,” Matthew Corner from CFS told 9News.
“Obviously had some luck on his side.
“The mine rescue jobs aren’t very common up here that was our first major one in about three years”
