Police call drink drivers "selfish pricks"

South Australia police recently launched a new advertising campaign and began calling drink drivers “selfish pricks” to try and reach the most intransigent offenders.

Following in their footsteps, here are some of the drink and drug drivers named and shamed that went through Adelaide courts last month.

Fast food craving leads to lost licence

Geoffrey Alan Cox blew over double the limit after a big day of drinking.

Cox was pulled over on December 26 at Ashford, where he was breathalysed and returned a reading of 0.137.

The court heard Cox had been drinking at a friend’s house before catching public transport home.

However, a craving for fast food got the better of him and he was heading to Hungry Jack’s when he was pulled over.

“I obviously wasn’t thinking,” he told the court.

Cox pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday to drink driving.

He was convicted, fined $900 and disqualified from driving for six-months.

Drink driver’s gobsmacking reading

Herbert Jungarrayi Martin, 57, will be off the road for 20 months after he was pulled over by police for driving slowly and then blew a staggering reading.

A police prosecutor told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday that police pulled Martin over on Whitmore Square in Adelaide on June 1.

“Police observed the vehicle travelling at a slow speed,” the police prosecutor said

Martin was breathalysed and returned a reading of 0.35, which is seven times the legal limit.

Martin, of Adelaide, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday to drink driving.

“I’m not sure it’s the highest but it’s very close to the highest reading I’ve ever encountered,” Magistrate Simon Smart told the court.

Mr Smart convicted Martin, fined him $1100 and disqualified him from driving for 20-months.

The court heard police attended an accident on Payneham Rd on January 1, where a car had collided with a pole.

Carter was breathalysed and returned a reading of 0.169.

The court heard Carter started drinking after work and then had driven to his friend’s place for more drinks.

He was on his way home when he collided with a pole.

Carter, of Rostrevor, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday to drink driving.

He was convicted, fined $1100 and disqualified from driving for one-year.

Labhaoise Jane Upton, 48, had her daughter in the car when she blew close to double the limit.

The court heard Upton was pulled over for a random breath test on January 7 at Plympton.

She was breathalysed and returned a reading of 0.097.

Upton told police she had been out for lunch and had drank four glasses of wine.

“She stated she had driven to collect her daughter after lunch and was on her way to collect her son,” the police prosecutor said.

“She told police it was a big wakeup call.”

Upton, of Firle, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday to drink driving with a child under 16 present.

She was convicted, fined $900 and disqualified from driving for six-months.

P-plater’s early celebrations end badly

Jackson Mathenge’s decision to kickstart his New Year celebrations early ended in a drink driving charge.

The court heard Mathenge was pulled over at Rosslyn Park on December 31.

He was breathalysed and returned a reading of 0.092.

Mathenge told police he had drunk whiskey at home and was on his way to his friend’s place for a New Year’s Eve party.

“He was on a provisional licence and said he thought the conditions were the same as a full licence holder,” a police prosecutor said.

Mathenge pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday to drink driving.

He was convicted, fined $900 and disqualified from driving for six-months.

Drugged and drunk man jailed for inner city crash

An Ingle Farm man affected by booze, meth and valium who drove down Waymouth St with two flat tyres then hospitalised another driver after an intersection crash was jailed.

Daniel Michael Loeser pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court earlier this month to several counts, including driving dangerously to escape police pursuit.

The court heard police attempted to stop Loeser on April 11, last year

To avoid police he changed lanes sharply, causing other vehicles to take “evasive action” with a speed camera on Marion Rd clocking him at an “extremely dangerous” 135km/h.

Later, he drove along Waymouth St “at speed” with two flat tyres – after police deployed spikes to stop him.

Judge Ian Press said Loeser admitted he had consumed “not insignificant” amounts of alcohol, valium and methamphetamine prior to the offending.

He was sentenced to two years, four months and two days jail, with a non-parole period of one year and four months, and is disqualified from holding a drivers licence for four years and six months.

A special needs kindergarten teacher said her small size was the reason for blowing over four times the legal limit after drinking at a friend’s birthday.

Maryam Najimi, 22, was rushing to meet her curfew when she was met with a breathalyser from police.

The court heard that Najimi was breathalysed at North Adelaide on February 22, last year.

She returned a reading of 0.221.

Najimi, of Novar Gardens, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to drink driving.

She was convicted, fined $1100 and disqualified from driving for one-year.
