An Ingle Farm man affected by booze, meth and valium who drove down Waymouth St with two flat tyres then hospitalised another driver after an intersection crash has been jailed.

Daniel Michael Loeser earlier pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court earlier this month to several counts, including driving dangerously to escape police pursuit and aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving.

The court heard on April 11 last year at about 9.40pm, police attempted to stop him while driving.

However, he refused to stop and drove off at about 90km/h in a suburban area “to escape” then later sped at 100km/h in a 60 zone.

To avoid police he changed lanes sharply, causing other vehicles to take “evasive action” with a speed camera on Marion Rd clocking him at an “extremely dangerous” 135km/h.

Later, he drove along Waymouth St “at speed” with two flat tyres – after police deployed spikes to stop him – before heading into West Terrace, entering the intersection “without looking or braking”.

He then collided with a vehicle as it was travelling in a southerly direction, with the driver having “no opportunity to avoid you”.

“You created a risk to the public at different times and at different places,” Judge Press said.

She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, with pain, numbness and “extensive bruising”.

“For three months after the collision, she had ongoing lower back and hip pain which necessitated weekly physiotherapy treatment,” he said.

“She was also unable to work for a period of time.”

The victim also had to deal with “increased nervousness and anxiety when driving”.

After the crash, the court heard Loeser then got out of his vehicle and ran but was quickly arrested by police about 50m from the collision, while his passenger suffered a badly broken ankle.

Loeser also refused a breath test

Judge Press said Loeser admitted he had consumed “not insignificant” amounts of alcohol, Valium and methyl amphetamine prior to the offending.

He said Loeser had “no regard for the safety of other road users”.

“Driving at 135 km/h on Marion Rd is of itself extremely dangerous,” he said.

“Doing so, while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, is more so.

“Similarly, driving with two flat tyres at speed into an intersection is obviously dangerous.”

The court heard the accused had told a psychologist he led a “chaotic lifestyle” with a daily substance habit.

Judge Press said Loeser had offended “continuously” over the past six years.

Loeser admitted he used drugs and alcohol to avoid dealing with his emotions and the “downward path” his life had taken.

He was sentenced to two years, four months and two days jail, with a non-parole period of one year and four months, and is disqualified from holding a drivers licence for four years and six months.
