A speeding, disqualified driver with an “appalling” record flipped her car and landed just meters from a resident sipping coffee in their front yard, a court has heard.

A disqualified driver who was allegedly speeding before flipping her car into a Millicent front yard has an “absolutely appalling history” for driving offences and should not be granted bail, a court has heard.

A police prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying Kelly Arthur, 42, posed a “serious risk” to herself and the public when she allegedly crashed her car on Mount Gambier Road at Millicent.

“In 20 years, she’s had 17 convictions for driving disqualified, a further 23 convictions for driving unlicensed,” the police prosecutor said.

“She’s also facing another five counts of driving disqualified, so she continues to drive in total defiance of the fact that she has no licence.”

The court heard police held the view that Arthur “posed a serious danger to both herself and the public” for her alleged offending on November 17.

“Whilst disqualified, she was driving at speeds in excess of 100km/h in a 60 zone at 2pm when the traffic conditions were medium to high in density,” the police prosecutor said.

“She crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, hit a kerb, her vehicle then became airborne.

“She travelled over a footpath, a boundary fence and the vehicle landed on its roof in the front yard of a witness who was metres away having a cup of coffee at the time.

“She fled the area then after requesting the witness not call police.”

Police put out a call in a bid to identify the driver of the car and following inquiries, and with the assistance from members of the public, Arthur was arrested on December 21.

Arthur, of Millicent, is charged with multiple offences, including driving in a reckless or dangerous manner and driving disqualified.

She is yet to enter any pleas.

Kate Budzynski, for Arthur, told the court her client’s driving convictions were dated.

“She has been for some time law abiding,” she said.

“She has now been in custody for a considerable amount of time.”

Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos granted Arthur home detention bail to a Millicent address.

“She has obviously had time to reflect on her manner of driving,” she said.

“The likelihood of risk to the public is minimised with home detention bail.”

The charges were adjourned until April.
