The man who allegedly stole a car while a baby slept in the back seat was on bail at the time of the incident, a court has heard.

Kieron Blundell, 37, appeared at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was arrested following the identification of his DNA in the vehicle.

Magistrate Rodney Oates denied Mr Blundell’s bid for bail outlining various factors for his decision including the accused’s history of prior offences and for allegedly committing a crime while on bail.

“I’m not willing to grant bail in any form,” he said.

“My reasons are that the charges are very serious, secondly, the defendant is allegedly offending while on bail.

“Thirdly, I need to protect the public … my next point is that there’s a need to ensure he turns up to court.

“Point number five he has a history of breaching bail, point number six I’m not confident he would comply with any form of bail.”

Mr Blundell, of Salisbury North, was arrested on Wednesday at a Port Adelaide address and charged with commit theft using force.

The police prosecutor outlined the horror moments before Mr Blundell allegedly stole the car with 18-month-old Baby Arli inside, saying his mother hit her head on the bitumen while attempting to stop the theft.

“The victim ran out and grabbed the defendant by the jumper, trying to pull him out of the vehicle,” he said.

“The defendant pulled his arm back trying to break her grip.

“The victim was yelling at the defendant about the presence of the baby inside the vehicle”.

The car was temporarily stopped outside The Pet Food Centre at Clearview on May 18 when Mr Blundell allegedly took the opportunity to steal the car.

Police were able to track the car using the alledged victim’s mobile phone and found it 20 minutes later at Rowe Circuit in Walkley Heights. Baby Arli was found safe and well inside.

The police prosecutor said the alledged victim has yet to identify Mr Blundell due to the short time they’ve had since his arrest.

Shortly after the incident Baby Arli’s father, Michael Ryan, spoke out saying he thought the worst after police told him what happened.

“I thought I had just lost my son,” he told 7 News.

“My partner, she actually was shouting at him: ‘my baby is in the car, my baby is in the car’.

“He even looked in the side of the car.”

Mr Blundell will appear at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court in November.
