Man arrested for stealing car with baby inside at Clearview

A man who left two parents fearing they would never see their child again has finally been arrested over a car theft at Clearview.

A man has been arrested almost two months after he allegedly stole a car with a baby inside at Clearview.

Police will allege the man stole the car on May 18 after a woman got out of her car at Hampstead Rd for a brief moment to go into a shop.

The man got into the car which had her 1-year-old son, Arli, sleeping inside it.

Police were able to track the car using the victim’s mobile phone and the vehicle was located 20 minutes later at Rowe Circuit in Walkley Heights.

Baby Arli was found safe inside.

Investigations led police to arrest the man today at Port Adelaide.

The man has been charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle and was refused bail to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

At the time, Arli’s father spoke out about his disbelief following the terrifying car robbery.

Michael Ryan said he thought the worst after police told him what happened.

“I thought I had just lost my son,” he told 7 News.

“My partner, she actually was shouting at him: ‘my baby is in the car, my baby is in the car’.

“He even looked in the side of the car.”

CCTV shows the minute his mother realised what had happened and desperately tried to stop the man from stealing her car with her son inside.

As a man entered the driver’s seat of her Mazda CX-9, the mother went into panic immediately, screaming at the suspect to stop.
