Joshua Elmsly and Sarah Powell guilty to roles in Oaklands Park abduction and robbery

A man feared he would be sold into the sex trade after he was lured by his ex-lover to a house, forced to strip and bound with cable ties in a terrifying enterprise.

A young mother avoided jail for causing her ex-boyfriend to feel like he was in a horror movie after he was bound with cable ties and threatened.

Sarah Jane Powell, 22, lured the unsuspecting victim to a house, where her boyfriend, Joshua Ross Ecclestone Elmsly, 27, was waiting with sinister intentions.

Powell was sentenced in August last year but the remarks were suppressed until recently as Elmsly was initially facing trial for his role.

During Powell’s sentencing, the court heard she lured the victim to an Oaklands Park house in October 2020, and took him to the bedroom.

The court heard Elmsly, who was holding a crowbar and a knife, tied the victim up with cable ties and demanded his online banking details.

“During the incident Mr Elmsly threatened to kill (the victim) several times, forced him to expose his genitals and repeatedly threatened to stab him with the knife,” Judge Rauf Soulio said.

The victim told Elmsly that there was $10,000 worth of gold in a safe at his mother’s house and called his mother to pick up the key.

The court heard Elmsly threatened the victim with a knife, saying he would put a hole in him for every half-hour he had to wait for his mother to arrive.

However, the victim’s mother and stepfather called police who arrested the couple’s co-accused, Eli James Seymour Robinson, 37, when he went out to hand over the safe key.

In his victim impact statement read to the court last year, the man said he feared he would become a victim of human trafficking.

“During the incident I felt that I was going to die or be sold into the sex trade,” he said.

“I felt humiliated and terrified, demoralised, dehumanised … I felt as if I were in a horror movie.

“I recently had an invite to a friend’s birthday to go to and had to check with three friends before attending to make sure it was for real and not another set up.”

Robinson pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was sentenced in June last year to 12 months jail, with a non-parole period of one month.

Due to his limited role – in which Robinson said he was bribed with drugs to participate – the sentence was suspended on a $500, two year good behaviour bond.

Powell pleaded guilty to kidnapping and robbery and was sentenced to three years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of one year and eight months.

Due to her drug rehabilitation efforts and new baby, she was ordered to serve the sentence on home detention.

Elmsly, who pleaded guilty to robbery, kidnapping and assault, will be sentenced later this week.
