Police have dropped all charges against a man they originally alleged falsely imprisoned his girlfriend in a series of domestic violence incidents.
Chad Geoffrey Smyth, 42, had 17 charges withdrawn in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday, after allegedly holding his girlfriend hostage on two occasions.
The Lewiston father-of-two was charged with an array of serious domestic violence charges, including multiple counts of false imprisonment, choking and aggravated assaults.
The charges had related to alleged incidents between December 31, 2021 and August 20, 2022 at Largs Bay and Lewiston.
During Mr Smyth’s unsuccessful bail application in November, the court heard Mr Smyth’s partner sent him a message on May 3, last year saying she wanted to end the relationship.
Mr Smyth arrived at her Largs Bay address and allegedly bound her with tape before stuffing her in a car boot and driving around with her in the boot for two hours.
Police also alleged Mr Smyth bound his girlfriend to the bed in June, with tape covering her mouth, because he wasn’t happy about her going to work.
Benjamin Newell, for Mr Smyth, told the court in his bail bid that the complainant was an “unreliable witness” and had previously gotten “cold feet” when pursuing charges.
Mr Newall also argued Mr Smyth’s concerns about losing his house due to his mortgage and having work available to him as a truck driver.
Mr Smyth was later released on bail after another bid.
In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday, all Mr Smyth’s charges were not proceeded with by prosecution.
