John Thomas Shaw pleaded not guilty to threatening homeowner during robbery

After losing his partner and baby in an overseas tragedy, a father will face trial accused of threatening to shoot the homeowner he was robbing.

A man who allegedly assaulted the homeowner he was in the middle of robbing has his life spiral out of control after the tragic death of his partner and baby.

John Thomas Shaw, 33, pleaded not guilty to two charges in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, accused of threatening to shoot the woman upon confrontation.

During Mr Shaw’s unsuccessful bail application in August, the court heard a woman returned to her Salisbury North home on June 27 and saw a man, alleged to be Mr Shaw in her front yard.

Mr Shaw was holding handbags which he had allegedly stolen from her house.

“She (the homeowner) followed him down the driveway yelling at him to stop,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Mr Shaw got into his car and the victim followed him.

“He’s then said ‘I’ve got a gun, I’ll shoot you, stay away’ and pushed her once, causing her to fall onto the road,” the police prosecutor said.

Mr Shaw then drove away, with the alleged victim writing down the registration number.

The court heard the woman’s front window had been forced open and numerous items, including jewellery and watches had been stolen.

Taylor Johanson, for Mr Shaw, told the court last month they put forward a potential resolution to prosecution where Mr Shaw would plead guilty to assault instead of the robbery.

“There’s a push to the shoulder … there’s also a threat uttered during that but the victim says she doesn’t believe the threat was capable of being carried out,” she said.

However, on Monday Ms Johanson told the court the negotiations had been unsuccessful and Mr Shaw, of Salisbury North, pleaded not guilty to serious criminal trespass and robbery using force.

Ms Johanson previously told the court Mr Shaw lost his wife and their fourth child who she was pregnant with in 2016.

Mr Shaw and Natasha Angie, 28, who was 26 weeks pregnant, were holidaying in the US when she suddenly developed a rare form of pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication that claimed both her life and that of their unborn baby boy.

The court heard Mr Shaw then struggled to get back into work after the Las Vegas tragedy and his life spiralled.

Mr Shaw, who is in custody, will next appear in the District Court for arraignment in April.
