Kiki Kiea Dean and Grant Steven Duncis both escape jail despite terrifying home invasion in Strathalbyn

A family endured a harrowing ordeal when two violent offenders kicked down the door to their Strathalbyn home in the middle of the night and began attacking them.

Home invasion laws: Your rights in Australia when an intruder breaks in

Two meth addicts who joined forces to commit a frightening invasion on a family home in Strathalbyn have both dodged jail despite brutally bashing the occupants.

Kiki Kiea Dean, 53, and Grant Steven Duncis, 40, were both given suspended jail terms in Adelaide District Court following the invasion, which occurred in March, 2019.

The court heard Duncis and Dean held the belief the home’s occupants – a couple and their son – owed them money and after they failed to return phone calls, the pair decided to take matters into their own hands.

Just after midnight Duncis and Dean kicked in a sliding door to the house and barged inside, before disarming one of the homeowners of a baseball bat and demanding money.

Duncis then bludgeoned one of the victims with a glass ashtray until the item broke, while Dean punched another resident in the face.

“(Duncis) hit (the victim) with a glass ashtray four or five times until the ashtray broke,” Judge Michael Durrant said during sentencing.

“(The victim) was bleeding from a 3cm cut to his left ear, cuts to his left elbow and a graze on his back.”

Dean also ordered another resident to turn off the CCTV system set up in the couple’s bedroom, before a melee ensued and she smashed a television in the bedroom and punched the victim again.

Both victims endured cuts and swelling to their heads as a result of the assaults.

The court heard since being charged of the attack, Duncis – a former dairy farmer – had displayed promising signs of rehabilitation and had been clean of drugs for the past two years.

Taking this into consideration, Judge Durrant elected to suspend Duncis’ prison sentence.

“To your credit, in the period since that offending in March 2019, you have taken real steps towards rehabilitation,” Judge Durrant said.

“I am encouraged by your progress while on bail and home detention.”

Dean, a former professional kickboxer and a beauty therapist, was also given a suspended sentence, despite admitting to still consuming methylamphetamine regularly.

Both Duncis and Dean were placed on 18-month good behaviour bonds.
