Norwood, Payneham & St Peters council has announced the grand opening for popular Maylands sports facility, which has undergone a $1.3m upgrade.

Cruickshank Reserve will be opened to the public on Saturday after the redevelopment was completed earlier this year, including a new clubroom, changerooms, toilets, canteen and a new office.

SA Senator Marielle Smith said the “vital improvements” to the reserve would see local families provided with “every opportunity to embrace active lifestyles”.

“This upgrade is an absolute boon for the Maylands Sports Centre, St Peters Tennis Club and the Gems Netball Club – all of whom use Cruickshank Reserve for training, games and community activities,” Ms Smith said.

“The upgraded facilities here at Cruickshank Reserve provide the ideal place for people from Mylands and the surrounding areas to come together and celebrate two things so intrinsic to Australian communities – mateship and sport.”

In 2022, Norwood Payneham & St Peters Council received $889k which it used to replace the existing clubroom and toilets with a $1.339m “fit-for-purpose” building to support tennis, netball and other recreation activities at the reserve.

The courts are currently leased to the Maylands Sports Centre and are used by the St Peters Tennis Club and the Gems Netball Club.

Mayor Robert Bria said he was optimistic about the future of the reserve as a result of the upgrade.

“The council is confident that the upgrade of the clubroom, two unisex change rooms, toilets and the canteen, will result in greater use of this popular reserve, now and into the future,” Mr Bria said.

“The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is greatly appreciative of the Australian Government’s generous funding contribution towards the upgrade of Cruickshank Reserve.

“Regular exercise and being outdoors is such an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”

Both Ms Smith and Mr Bria will be present at Saturday’s official opening.
