Some of Australia’s most famous athletes graced the Lion Hotel in the 2010s, from brother/sister duo Jack Trengrove and Jessica Stenson, to Geelong Cats legend Cameron Ling.
For the past two decades, the Lion has been one of North Adelaide’s hottest pubs to hit on a Friday or Saturday night – or even on a Sunday for some casual ciders.
Former co-owner Tim Gregg took over the popular establishment in 1996, operating for more than 20 years before eventually selling it to current owners Duxton Pubs Group.
Mr Gregg said the pub was well-known for appearances of high-profile athletes and people from the world of sport.
“A lot of the cricket guys came through as well as AFL footballers at various times,” he said.
“Sam Newman was a regular when he was doing the Footy Show – Dermott Brereton and guys like that were always around – so yeah, it was a pretty high-profile crowd in terms of the sporting world.
“North Adelaide, for a start, is in good proximity to a lot of the sporting infrastructure. You know, it’s close to the Oval so it was a pretty automatic connection in that sense, but it was also the most popular bar in town in many ways.
“Those guys wanted to be where the action was and they also created the action themselves. You’re always trying to attract those high-profile people because they make it an exiting place.”
