Keiran Andrews denied bail, charged with brutal assault on girlfriend in Murray Bridge

A woman bit her partner’s finger in a desperate bid to escape from his alleged horrific attack, which included choking her until her vision started to blur.

A man who allegedly choked his girlfriend, leaving her struggling to breathe, said he now accepts that the relationship is over.

Keiran Charles Andrews, 31, applied for home detention bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, charged with the brutal assault.

A prosecutor opposed Mr Andrew’s release on bail, due to the seriousness of the allegations.

The court heard the alleged victim returned home on February 2 and Mr Andrews and his mother were present.

“The accused called the complainant a c*** sucker, and an argument ensued,” the prosecutor said.

The court heard the alleged victim attempted to leave but Mr Andrews blocked her and allegedly placed both his hands around her neck.

The alleged victim bit Mr Andrews on one of his fingers to escape and ended up in the bedroom.

“She tried to open the window and yell for help … the accused leaned over the top of the complainant and grabbed her around the neck again with both hands and applied pressure,” the prosecutor said.

“She felt as though her throat was closing and struggled to breathe and her vision started to blur.”

The court heard the alleged victim suffered bruising around her neck.

Mr Andrews, of Murray Bridge, is charged with choking, suffocating or strangling a person and assault.

Catriona Murdoch, for Mr Andrews, told the court he could live in Port Augusta if released on bail, which is four hours away from where the alleged victim lives.

“Mr Andrews does now accept that the relationship between him and the complainant is well and truly over,” she said.

Ms Murdoch said the prosecution case was “fairly weak” and was centred around a “he said, she said” scenario.

“These two were madly in love with each other and she was complacent to any (bail) breaches,” she said.

“Love doesn’t conquer all,” Magistrate Simon Smart replied.

Ms Murdoch agreed, saying Mr Andrews was now in a better frame of mind.

“He’s spent five months incarcerated contemplating those errors of judgment,” she said.

Mr Smart refused Mr Andrews bail and the charges were adjourned until next month.
