Popular Japanese discount store, Daiso, has quietly closed the doors of its Rundle Mall location with a small, handwritten sign appearing in the shopfront on Monday.
The Advertiser understands that the closure comes as the company prepares for the opening of a new Daiso store in Gawler Place.
Daiso opened their Myer Centre shop in 2017 and also have locations in Westfield Marion and in Hollywood Plaza, Salisbury.
The remaining two stores are still open for business.
The new Adelaide CBD Daiso will be located at 55 Gawler Place, which once housed Priceline Pharmacy.
General Manager of Daiso Industries Australia, Jennifer Hansen said that shoppers should look forward to a rebranded store which will be almost double the size of the Myer Centre location and will be Adelaide’s biggest Daiso.
Ms Hansen said the company are hoping to have the store open by June 1 but are still in the process of finalising permits.
According to their website, Daiso stocks over 25,000 items from beauty products to cleaning, gardening and electrical supplies with majority being priced at $3.30.
The company is an extension of the Japanese 100 yen store with a six-story Daiso shop located in the heart of Tokyo.
Since coming to Australia ten years ago, there are now 39 Daiso stores across the country.
Information about the opening the new Adelaide city location is yet to be published on Daiso’s website or social media channels but the Google profile of the Myer Centre shop has been marked as “permanently closed”.
The location has also been removed from the store list on Daiso’s website.
It is expected that more details about Daiso’s grand opening will be available soon.
The Myer Centre confirmed the closure but said they have no comment on who will fill the store vacancy.
