City favourite Abbots and Kinney named Adelaide CBD’s best cafe

A city cafe which began it’s journey selling pastries in Leigh Street and now has three locations has won the title of best cafe in Adelaide’s CBD.

Gaining a loyal following when competing with dozens of other cafes in the city is no easy feat – but Abbots and Kinney’s popularity with the Adelaide CBD crowd has seen it take out Delicious Local’s best cafe award.

Abbots and Kinney received 33.33 per cent of the overall vote.

Owner Jonny Pisanelli started the business off 10 years ago, selling pastries in Leigh Street.

From there, he opened the Pirie Street store, followed by Croydon and Unley. The business also operates out of the University of South Australia.

Mr Pisanelli credits a large part of the cafes’ success to his staff, with Abbots and Kinney employing 15 people.

“Having the right people at the right stores has been key,” he said.

Mr Pisanelli said continuing to trade through COVID also helped create customer loyalty.

“Through COVID, when a lot of other people were closing their stores, we said let’s keep going and be here for the people that are still here in the city,” he said.

“It was actually a good opportunity to make some new customers, because their usual coffee shops were closed.”

But Abbots and Kinney did have to change the way they did business through COVID, with staff delivering pastries to people’s houses, to grinding coffee and delivering beans.

“COVID allowed us to show we can adapt and how resilient we are as a business,” Mr Pisanelli said.

Mr Pisanelli said it was great to be recognised in the Delicious Local awards, and he believes coming up with new creations regularly played a large part in the win.

“The excitement we see from customers, it gives us the drive to try new things,” he said.
