Everyone loves a villain and Gaston, the arrogant antagonist in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, is no exception.

Jackson Head plays the popular role in the new Australian musical production, which premiered at the Adelaide Festival Theatre this weekend.

The Queensland performer said the Gaston character was “incredibly fun” to play.

“He’s a comedic role, he’s also one of the more layered characters that we find in the Disney villain canon,” Head said

“I think one of my favourite moments to perform in the show is the number ‘Gaston’.

“It’s an eight-minute long, high gusto production number filled with all the mug-clinking, prop-wielding, aerobic and acrobatic goodness you could dream of.”

Based on the hit 1991 animated film, the epic love story turned blockbuster Broadway musical is in Adelaide for the first time for a two-month season.

Adam Di Martino, who plays Gaston’s sidekick Le Fou, said Adelaide audiences were in for a real treat.

“This show is visually stunning, and a great story for all ages. It’s the perfect romantic date night with your partner, or great for a group of friends mid week after work,” he said.

Head described the production as a “feast for the senses”.

“It’s magic. The story itself is beautiful, but the production elevates this to a level almost beyond comprehension,” he said.

Beauty and the Beast is in Adelaide until July 6. Tickets are on sale now.

The competition opens at 5am (SA time) on Sunday, May 11 and entries close at 5am (SA time) on Thursday, May 15.
