Everyone remembers their wedding day as the best day of their life but now Port Lincoln couple Astyn Reid and Ben Underdown can say they had the best wedding in South Australia.
The pair have beaten more than 30 newlyweds who were nominated in The Advertiser’s search for the state’s best nuptials since July 2024.
When Ms Reid was informed of her and her husband’s triumph, her first response was an excited, “oh my god!”.
“It’s awesome,” she said.
“I can’t believe that people have voted for us.”
Their son, Hunter, died 11 days after his birth after tragically losing his battle with group B streptococcus (GBS), also known as Strep B.
As a tribute to their beloved boy, Ms Reid and Mr Underdown were married under Hunter’s Moon on their family farm.
“(Hunter) is still very much part out of our family and our lives,” Ms Reid told The Advertiser.
“He came into our lives to enrich them and teach us a lot of lessons and make us live life a lot more purposefully and be more present and appreciate everything we’ve got.”
Their joyful wedding was called “WEDFEST” with showbags, sideshows, live bands, face painting and carnival food adding to the festive atmosphere.
“It was like a week-long party,” Ms Reid said.
With the help of their loved ones, the couple raised over $8000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service who were instrumental in flying Hunter from their regional community to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide.
“Our son being remembered and talked about … is the most important thing to us,” Ms Reid said.
