Uraidla church home to Lost in a Forest pizza and wine bar for sale

A 1892-built church that’s home to one of the Adelaide Hills’ most creative pizza restaurants has hit the market.

Pairing fine wine with fast food

A gorgeous former church – and the home of a cult Adelaide Hills pizza restaurant – has hit the market.

St Stephens Church in Uraidla, which was built in 1892, is up for sale with a price range from between $1.65m to $1.8m

The church was previously a studio-style home, then B&B, and has been home to Lost in a Forest wood oven and wine bar – and wedding venue – for about seven years.

The property on Uraidla’s main street was extensively renovated in 2004 and features the original stained-glass windows and stunning balcony.

The restaurant is well-known for rule-breaking, delicious and creative pizzas, its minimal intervention wine list and 90s alt-rock playlists – and even earned praise from British chef Marco Pierre White as “the best pizza I’ve had in my life”.

It was started by rock star Basket Range winemaker Taras Ochota with mate Charlie Lawrence. Ochota died in 2020 after a long battle with illness, his death announced by the frontman of US rock band Tool, Maynard James Keegan, with whom he’d made wine.

There are two titles on the 1780sq m property, with the church title including three main dining areas, wood-fired pizza oven, semi-commercial kitchen and wine bar facilities and parking.

The takeaway servery title includes commercial compliant kitchen within an eight-by-10m custom-built flatlined panelled shed, walk-in cool room and freezer with extensive shelving, servery window and main parking area.

Lease-back opportunities exist for Lost in a Forest.
