Calling all bargain hunter: Sydney Airport is today auctioning off all the lost goodies travellers have left behind over the last year.
There are some wild items up for grabs, ranging from teddy bears and vacuum cleaners to frying pans and air fryers.
More than 2,000 items will be going under the hammer in total, with the proceeds going towards free swimming lessons for local families struggling with cost-of-living pressures.
More than $1.9 million has been raised by Sydney Airport’s Lost Property Auctions over the years and the 2025 auction aims to add to that substantially in 2025.
250 laptops, 200 sets of headphones, 60 kindles, 100 pairs of sunnies, 250 pieces of clothing, 80 handbags/wallets, 50 cameras, 50 bottles of perfume and 250 pieces of jewellery and watches are up for grabs this year.
Bargain hunters can also scoop up 40 gaming consoles, 40 hairdryers, 30 toys (including a giant teddy), 10 boxed lego sets, 4 bikes, 3 surfboards and 2 sets of golf clubs.
Things then get even stranger, with a vacuum cleaner, a frying pan, an air fryer, a coffee machine, 2 pairs of binoculars, a Lord of the Rings book collection, a violin and an electric keyboard all in the auction as well.
Sydney Airport is donating $100,000 to the swimming lessons initiative to get the auction going, which will fund the equivalent of 4,000 free swimming lessons for kids who need them.
The airport is aiming to raise $200,000 more from this year's auction, which will pay for another 8,000 swimming lessons.
Sydney Airport General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Josh Clements said this auction was about more than picking up a nice toy.
"Together, the Inner West Aquatics team and Sydney Airport are committed to improving water safety, promoting health and wellbeing, giving more of our local children the chance to learn to swim," he said.
"We’ve kicked this fund off with a $100,000 donation and hope the Lost Property Auction will help triple that amount."
"For every $25 raised, another child gets a free swimming lesson, equipping them with life-saving skills and confidence in the water, right here in the communities around the airport.”
Royal Life Saving Society Health Promotions Manager Louise Smalley said the initiative was a great idea.
“It’s brilliant to see Sydney Airport turning lost property into little swimmers," she said.
“Swimming is a vital life skill, but our research shows nearly half of Year 6 students in Australia can’t swim 50 metres and one in ten children aged five to fourteen have never had a swimming lesson."
She said the program was a powerful way to support local families and build safer communities around the airport.
