The old Adelaide UniBar, in historic Union House, has been transformed into the university’s first restaurant.
Modern Australian eatery Taikunthi has opened its doors on level five, serving up breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday.
From the Kaurna word meaning “join, unite and partner together”, the revamped venue is aimed at the public as well as students and faculty members.
Restaurant manager Vanessa Payne said Taikunthi has an “offering for every occasion”.
“Traditionally the university has been a home for students, staff and lecturers but this restaurant is set to change this,” she said.
Gone are the dirty carpets and budget beer, replaced by a fresh new fit-out and a selection of top SA wines, including vintages by alumni-owned wineries.
Taikunthi’s menu, from head chef Julian Nicholas, will focus on local ingredients and feature an extensive charcuterie selection.
Built by the Student Union in the early 1970s, Union House’s level five was home to the UniBar for more than four decades. The beloved institution played host to hundreds of legendary music gigs, enjoyed by thousands of uni students tucking into refreshments after class.
The UniBar shut its doors in February 2019 as Union House underwent a major renovation and it has since been relocated to the ground floor.
