I’ve found the most Aussie hack to stop a pesky bin-day problem

If it's not the wind blowing the lid open, it's the iconic Aussie bird having a feed. This simple trick solves both.

Keep those pesky ibises out of your bins for good!

Are you even living in Australia if you haven't: a) had your food stolen by a bin chicken or b) had your rubbish bin rummaged by a bin chicken?

Love them or loathe them, the Ibis bird is an Aussie icon, often found lurking around many parks, beaches, school playgrounds, and sometimes your front yard on bin collection day.

They've been nicknamed the poultry of our trash because of their scavenger nature and are known to go to great lengths to get your food scraps.

The very Aussie hack to stop bin chickens opening your bin

One of the most common complaints by Aussie locals is their ability to open our bin lids and create a big mess before the garbo even arrives to collect it.

Well, my Aussie mates, I'm here to tell you that I've found a rather clever way to outsmart our long-beaked feathered friends and it's all thanks to a local community group I'm in on Facebook (is there any other way??)

I saw that many Aussies swear by the hack of securing bottles to the bin lid handle with cable ties to weigh it down, making it harder for the birds to open.

What's more, the trick also prevents the lids from flying up and open in the wind. Clever!

Sharing the hack on TikTok, I was gobsmacked by how much interest it got - over 40K views and many people weighing in with their thoughts.

There's a reason the bin chickens go through your bin

While some people claimed the hack was rather clever, others said there was an easier solution to the common problem.

"They open bins because the bins are overflowing with rubbish. Just ensure lids can be closed completely," one person commented.

"My neighbours did this but they overfill their bin so it doesn't make a difference," another added.

And another echoed: "Don't overflow your bings and you won't have an issue."

Bruh, people will just take the bottles!

Meanwhile, others said the ibis wasn't the problem here and there was something else that needed closer attention - people rummaging through your bins to take your bottles and cans for cash!

"Yeah but someone will take the bottles for 10 cent returns," one laughed.

Another agreed: "But the pests that go thru the bins for bottles will rip them off (humans)."

Have you seen it done? Even better, would you actually do it?
