'Morons!' Aussies slammed for reserving park spaces with common kitchen item

The local council has weighed in on the 'selfish' trend that has to be seen to be believed.

Australia's Social Conventions: A Guide for First-Time Visitors

Forget the CoolCabanas, beach trolleys, and all of the things that have previously annoyed you in public spaces.

A new trend is taking over Aussie parks and it has many convinced they've now seen it all.

People are now going that extra mile to reserve the best spots at local parks by wrapping the public huts in cling wrap.

I wish it was a joke but it's not.

Aussies are reserving huts with cling wrap

A photo taken at a local park located in Wollongong, New South Wales, has been shared online showing the rather strange way someone has attempted to reserve a public hut.

The undercover tables can seen wrapped in cling film to ensure no one else enters the area.

Naturally, locals and parkgoers were fuming at the sight and people on social media also slammed the thought of this now becoming a trend.

"We're living in an age of morons," one person slammed online.

Another insisted this act was just "outright selfish".

A parent told Kidspot that they couldn't believe this was actually something real that has happened.

"Organising a park party is stressful, I get that, but this is just taking things to a whole new level! I can't believe it's real," the mum said.

Another mum added: "I think I'd just laugh if I saw it. They've got guts for sure!"

Council has had enough

Even the local council has had enough of entitled acts such as this that they've resorted to placing signs around public spaces to discourage anyone else from doing it.

The threat of fines has also been thrown out there in case it continues.

Kidspot reached out to Wollongong City Council, who are yet to comment, but Wollongong Lord Mayor, Tania Brown, told 9News that this way of attempting to "reserve" a spot was not one that was going to be tolerated.

“As they are in shared public spaces, the use of cling wrap or any other material to cordon off or ‘reserve’ spots like beach huts and barbecue picnic tables is prohibited,” she said in a statement.

“It is unfortunate that we have had to erect signage to remind people of this, but I would hope people show common courtesy to one another when it comes to shared spaces and facilities.

“Our rangers do patrol these areas and will remove any wrapping they find, and members of the public should contact Council and report this behaviour if they encounter it.”

Aussies are obsessed with reserving public spots

If we have learnt anything from the summer cabana trend, it's that many Aussies are obsessed with having the perfect spot anywhere they go.

Back in July 2024, we saw parents ignoring the "first come, first served" rule at local parks by placing reserved signs on the public benches

A post on an online advice forum on Reddit shamed parents for reserving tables at their local park for their toddler's birthday.

Not only did they mark their territory by decorating three tables with tablecloths, but they also left a threatening note warning potential table-stealers that they would 'ruin' their child's birthday.

The note read: "Reserved for a birthday party. Please respect the space we've set aside and do not use our tables. This is for a four-year-old's party, don't be the one to mess it up, thank you."

The news sparked fierce debate online at the time, but it appears as though it was just the beginning of this new "reserve" trend.
