TWO AFL stars and a former Rugby Union captain walk into a bar … to talk about wine.

Port Adelaide Football Club’s Tom Jonas and former player Brad Ebert will join Wallabies stalwart Nathan Sharpe at East End Cellars in a new Tasting Australia festival event, Off the Field, to share their respective drops with fans of sport and wine alike.

Ebert, who launched Hey Diddle Wines’ first vintage with teammate Jonas in 2018, says it will be their biggest tasting event yet.

“To do a proper thing like this, where you're sharing the story (of the label) and experience, sparking a good conversation and being able to do it with a former Wallaby is pretty cool,” says Ebert, 30, who retired from football at the end of last season.

Jonas and Ebert will share the tasting bench with Sharpe’s The Kings’ Creed – a collaboration with SA winemaker Ben Riggs.

“It’s great to be able to partner with Tasting Australia, especially after the year that has been, to … show our wines,” Ebert says.

“A lot of people seem to love wine and sport, so I think it’s a nice little in-between.”

The festival’s beverage director, Nick Stock, says the event will include plenty of banter. “Barossa and McLaren Vale (where the wines are made) have always had their friendly rivalry, and Aussie rules and rugby have the exact same thing,” he says. “You’ll get to meet these accomplished sportspeople and understand what brings them to SA to make wine.”

Off the Field is on May 1 at 1pm - tickets live from 7am Friday, February 12, at tastingaustralia.com.au
