They’re scrolls fit for royalty. But despite the name, the head baker of Mt Gambier’s Scroll Queen isn’t actually a queen, but a king.
Dylan McQueen’s handmade scrolls were such a hit at local markets in Mt Gambier, the self-taught baker opened his own bricks-and-mortar shop near the Blue Lake. And the fans keep rolling in.
“One of the biggest markets we ever did was the annual Christmas market in 2018; we sold 200 scrolls in about two hours,” says McQueen. “That’s when I realised, okay, I might have something here.”. He opened the doors to Scroll Queen – a play on his surname – in April 2020 during the height of COVID-19.
“I quit my day job so I had no choice but to open,” he says. “It worked out in the end – I just followed the rules and (COVID) guidelines.”
McQueen now goes through up to 800 scrolls in a single day, on top of supplying four local cafes. His most popular creations include the classic “cinnascroll” – a cinnamon scroll with vanilla glaze, and the savoury cheese ‘n’ chive, though you’ll also find Oreo, Reese’s peanut butter, and bacon jam among 70 rotating flavours.
“I never anticipated for it to become what it’s become, I’ve been blown away by the community support,” McQueen says. For those outside of the Mount, there’s good news.
“I hope to expand and open a store in Adelaide, and do coffee, too,” he says.
