A South Australian pastry chef has been honoured as one of the nation’s best at the annual ‘Cake Oscars’.
Jeremy Allan from Urban Desserts in Noarlunga was dubbed 2024 pastry chef of the year at the ACADA Australasian Cake Oscar Awards.
He donned a sparkly jacket as he accepted the gong on April 13 at the awards ceremony in Brisbane.
“It felt amazing, it was a surreal moment when they called my name” the 39-year-old said.
“We’re starting to be recognised for what we do.”
Mr Allan said his love for baking started when he was making cakes for his children’s birthday parties.
“That’s when I discovered the world of patisserie,” he said.
The talented pastry chef started making his cakes from home in 2018 before opening his first store in Morphett Vale.
“I let my creativity fly when I’m making my cakes,” he said.
Mr Allan, 39, who used to work in the steel industry, is accustomed to the limelight after he competed on The Great Australian Bake Off in 2016.
“We’re starting to be recognised for what we do,” he said.
In August last year, Mr Allan announced the closure of their Glenelg shop as a result of rising costs.
“We gave it our best shot,” a sign on the shop read.
“Unfortunately due to lack of support – Urbans in Glenelg will no longer open.
“We want to thank the lovely people who came in when we were open, we know you tried to spread the word but it simply costs us more to be here then we could make.”
Urban Desserts remains open at Colonades with a store expected to open in Elizabeth soon.
