Popular vegan cafe CRUX, which developed Australia’s first vegan eggs Benedict, is closing.
Owners of the Semaphore cafe, whose TikTok video of vegan eggs went viral on social media platform TikTok in 2019, have announced they are “unable to continue this business at this time”.
“We are devastated to announce that CRUX will be closing its doors in February 2023,” they wrote on Instagram.
“Unfortunately, things are tough out there for small businesses, and it’s been especially difficult over the last couple of years. We are unable to continue this business at this time despite or ongoing passion for the industry and our amazing, open-minded customers and loyal staff.
“Please help us end on a positive note by coming in and allowing us to serve you your last favourite meal. CRUX will endeavour to exhaust all options to potentially relaunch in due course but for now, with a heavy heart, it’s goodbye from us. We take this opportunity to thank the vegan and gluten free community for supporting us through our entire time of business.
As well as realistic faux eggs – complete with a runny “yolk” – CRUX also served up vegan fried “chicken”, vegan buffalo wings and streaky bacon.
CRUX’s last day of service will be Thursday, February 9.
