Oak & Iron Tavern in Mt Barker launches autism-friendly sensory dining experience

An Adelaide Hills restaurant has launched a new dining experience touted as an Australian first. And the basis for it has a deeply personal connection with its founder.

Study: Autism affects about 1/40 Aussies

When Deanna Wallis, director of family-run SA institution Wallis Cinemas, goes out for dinner, she often feels overwhelmed by choices.

Ms Wallis, 28, has both ADHD and autism – and now, she’s using her own personal journey to change the dining options for people with similar diagnoses.

Nestled inside Mt Barker’s historic Auchendarroch House, the Oak & Iron Tavern – run by the Wallis family – will introduce an Australian-first dining experience for people with autism next month.

“I kind of knew for a very long time that I was autistic – and I’ve always really struggled with going to restaurants because eating is quite a challenge for autistic individuals in terms of textures and tastes and all of those things,” Ms Wallis said.

“I really wanted to challenge the norm and think: ‘How can we make our restaurant open or those with sensory needs?’.”

With the backing of Autism SA, the service will offer reduced lighting and sound, table service and a sensory friendly menu specially designed based off Ms Wallis’ personal experiences.

Diners will be able to choose from two neurodivergent-friendly options – chicken nuggets and chips or a six-hour slow-cooked plain beef pie with chips – or a plate with the choice of three or five options.

Served on divided plates, the “build your own” option offers plain proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables with salt, pepper and sauces available at the table.

“Everyone gets the season to their own taste, because a lot of people struggle with spices and peppers and salts and all of those things,” Ms Wallis said.

“It’s one evening a month that families who might not always be able to dine out can come and enjoy a safe and inclusive space.”

Diners will also have access to sensory toys and a quiet room for those who need to step out and reset.

The Oak & Iron Tavern’s quiet dinners will be held on the second Tuesday of every month from 5pm to 8pm, with bookings essential.
