The team behind Osteria Oggi is opening a new aperitivo bar and cocktail lounge inspired by the old-school Italian dairy shops of the 1950s.
Latteria on Hutt Street will launch this week, with a focus on handcrafted cocktails, a quality wine list and a selection of Italian small plates – plus a few bigger options.
Led by Oggi’s Nicola Pau and Luca Baioni, alongside top chefs Max O’Callaghan and Rhys Nicholson, the project is a nod to Milan’s traditional dairy bars, a neighbourhood shop where customers could buy milk products, before evolving into a place to enjoy small bites and drinks.
“Luca and I, we grew up going to latterias, hanging out with our friends. We thought, ‘What if latterias were still around today, and what would they look like if they found a new home in Adelaide?’ said Pau, who moved to Adelaide from Milan over a decade ago.
Curating the drinks list is Baioni, who has worked at top bars around the world including Jerry Thomas Speakeasy (Rome) and Black Pearl (Melbourne), and most recently was a brand ambassador for Campari Group.
O’Callaghan (Osteria Oggi, Press* Food and Wine), and Nicholson (Press* Food and Wine, Orso, Sol Rooftop & Bar), are the brains behind the menu, which focuses on the aperitivo style of dining where small snacks and drinks are combined.
“The culinary ethos at Latteria is anchored in the relaxed, shared dining experiences typical of Italian bars where simple, fresh, local, small plates are the norm,” Nicholson said.
“Dishes have been inspired by the essence of traditional street fare – casual table and bar dining in Italy.”
Guided by leading Adelaide restaurateur Simon Kardachi (Oggi, Fugazzi), the team will launch Latteria on Thursday.
