An award-winning pizza restaurant has suddenly closed its doors after more than two decades in operation.
The owners of Goodslice Pizza Glenelg, formerly known as Goodlife Modern Organic Pizza, bid farewell to customers on Sunday night in a social media post.
“Goodslice is now permanently closed,” they wrote.
“They say it takes a great community to make a good pizza … and we agree. What a community. From amazing South Australian suppliers producing local SA ingredients for our unique pizzas.
“Plus brilliant teams of great smiling staff, many who have become lifelong friends, we are truly grateful. And to the lovely customers, some who have been consistent visitors for over 22 years, we say, thank you.
“It’s been an amazing ride.”
Goodlife Pizza on Hutt St was first launched in 2003 by brothers Jake, Martin and Michael Greenrod, soon expanding to Jetty Rd, Glenelg, and North Adelaide.
The health-conscious pizzerias served up thin-style, organic and chemical-free pizzas with quirky toppings, including free range chicken with baby potatoes and parmesan cheese, and lobsters and prawns.
It quickly became a hit with the local celebrity set, attracting a host of well-known diners including then-Crows stars Mark Ricciuto, Simon Goodwin and Andrew McLeod, tennis champ Lleyton Hewitt, singer Ben Folds, actor Hugo Weaving, TV presenters Grant Denyer and Port president David Koch, plus celebrity chefs such as Maggie Beer and Matt Moran.
The business was also named Best Pizza Restaurant in Australia three times at the National Restaurant and Catering Awards, and secured the same title on seven occasions at the SA awards.
The brothers would eventually close their Hutt St and North Adelaide sites, before Michael and Martin left the company on good terms in 2019.
Eager to put his stamp on business, Jake changed its name to Goodslice and after 19 years on Jetty Rd, he moved the sole remaining pizzeria to Broadway, Glenelg, in 2022.
In April this year, the restaurant moved to a takeaway-only format.
A host of Adelaide hospitality businesses have closed over the last 12-18 months as the industry battles rising costs and reduced consumer spending due to the cost-of-living crisis.
Other popular venues to shut include Brighton cafe CREAM and city restaurant Remy’s Deep Dish Pizza, the historic River Cafe and Red Ochre Barrel + Grill, on the River Torrens, Karma and Crow, Aces Chinatown, and Love, Stephy Patisserie in the city, just to name a few.
