The Macclesfield Hotel
Many good judges regard this Hills venue as home to the best schnitzel in South Australia. It’s hard to argue once you take that first bite, with its perfectly crunchy crust and tender meat, alongside a healthy smattering of crispy chips.
Their mega schnitties are also renowned for their size, weighing half a kilo on average. Patrons are spoiled for choice here, with house-made chicken, beef and pork schnitzels available with up to 13 different sauce and topping combinations.
Among the options there’s the 3 Little Pigs (BBQ sauce, ham, bacon, cheese and pork belly) and the Cheeseburger (nap sauce, onion, pickle, cheese, mustard and mayo).
You won’t go home disappointed.

The Birkenhead Tavern
This classic Aussie pub in Adelaide’s northwest is passionate about their breaded cutlets, allocating three days each week – Monday to Wednesday – as schnitzel nights.
There’s nothing like a discounted schnitzel and punters can pick from nine toppings, including the traditional parmigiana to more exotic options such as the Boscaiola (bacon, mushroom, onion cream and cheese) and the Birk (avocado, prawns, sweet chilli and cream cheese).
Customers rave about the thick, juicy schnittys and chunky cut chips with plenty of flavour.
Situated on the water by the Port Adelaide River, the tavern is an ideal spot to enjoy a meal and a drink while admiring the view from the deck.

Earl of Leicester
Devotees have been raving about the Leicester’s giant offerings for years – in particular their Earl schnitzel: a hefty 600g, house-crumbed chicken breast or grain-fed beef schnitty, served with chips and salad.
Named SA’s best schnitzel in a 2020 Advertiser poll, there’s a vast array of sauces and toppings available, from green peppercorn gravy and dianne sauce to theNYC, a combination of pepperoni, fresh chilli, olives, napoli sauce, parmesan and fior di latte.
Regulars will know it can take some time to make a dent into their most popular dish, with the schnitzel well and truly exceeding the size of the plate.

The Warradale Hotel
This suburban pub has a highly regarded menu of pizzas, classic dishes and meat on the grill, but it’s their schnitzels that are the stars of the show.
Tuck into their traditional chicken breast or porterhouse cutlets (either as a parmi or even a vegan parmi), with sauces including gravy, mushroom, diane, pepper or Argentinian chimmi churri. There’s also an eggplant option for added variety.
It’s nothing overly fancy but the schnitty is always moist and thick, and maintains a crispy, golden-brown coating even after it’s doused with your choice of sauce.
And of course, it all comes with a generous amount of chips, well seasoned with a nice crunch on the outside.

Da Vinci Ristorante
Foodies around town will be very familiar with this well-located eatery. Da Vinci has arguably the biggest schnitzel menu in Adelaide, with a remarkable 28 different offerings.
Trying out the various toppings is like going on a global tour. There’s the Aussie Outback (mushroom, bacon, egg, melted cheese, smoky BBQ sauce), the Carribean (pineapple, avocado, melted cheese), Texas Style (pepperoni, jalapeños, chilli, hot sauce, melted cheese) or the Spanish Matador Schnitzel (sausage, sliced tomato, hint of chilli, and cheese).
If you feel like adding some extra carbs, take on the gnocchi Volcano, complete with a serve of gnocchi bolognese and shaved parmesan.
