An emphasis on using local produce has seen one Adelaide pub’s signature burger crowned the best in the state.
According to the The Griffins Hotel chef Luke Brabin, a crunchy texture, juicy and tender patty, with a hint of zing and a touch of creaminess was the key to winning SA’s Best Pub Burger, beating 40 other entries.
After a battle between 12 finalists, The Griffins Hotel won with its Mayura Station wagyu beef burger.
The victorious burger costs $25 and features local ingredients including Mayura Station wagyu beef, smoked Barossa bacon, ketchup, chimichurri, pickles, tomatoes, cos lettuce and cheese.

Judge Chris Stephan said “not only was it well-seasoned with a fantastic flavour, but it also had a combination of different textures.”
“We were so pleased that we were able to win against such worthy competitors,” hotel licensee Adam Vonthethoff said.
“Everybody should get to their local pub and try their burger.”
The SA Best Pub Burger challenge has been running for 15 years, and this year’s competition was held at The Griffins Hotel on Hindmarsh Square in the Adelaide CBD in front of a live audience and expert judging panel.
Burgers were judged against a list of criteria, which included the ingredients of the burger, taste, meat content, value for money and presentation of the chef.
The expert judging panel consisted of Shane Wood of Thomas Foods Australia, Chris Stephan of Pen & Palate, and Andrew Hayes of Nova 91.9 – who all agreed “The Griffins Hotel burger was the standout burger”.
The iconic item on the menu for many hotels across the state varied greatly from each entry. With “venues often adding their own individual flair as a point of difference.”
The other finalists in the competition were Arkaba Hotel, Aldinga Hotel, Earl of Leicester Hotel, Largs Pier Hotel, Maylands Hotel, Park Hotel, Port Broughton Hotel, Port Lincoln Hotel, Risdon Hotel, Sussex Hotel and the Woodside Hotel.
