One of Adelaide’s oldest pubs appears to have shut its doors after falling into liquidation – just over two months after its grand reopening.
The historic Edinburgh Castle, on Currie St, was closed for more than five years, before it was relaunched in December 2023 under new operators, Jatin Malhotra and Rohit Kapur.
But the venue, which was renovated with two new bars and revamped beer garden, was forced to close again this week.
On Monday, Robert Naudi was appointed liquidator to wind up the venue. Calls to the venue were not answered on Wednesday.
At a creditors’ meeting, it was noted that Trident House Pty Ltd, the entity operating the venue, was “unable to pay its debts”.
The heritage-listed Edinburgh Castle has the oldest trading licence in South Australia, dating back to 1837.
The grand old pub last closed its doors in September 2018, with the owner Tony Bond blaming disruption caused by a nearby construction project: a nearby $80m, 772-bed student accommodation complex.
The Edinburgh Castle Hotel was eventually sold for $2.5 million in 2021.
