The team behind celebrated ice cream brand Gelato Messina has finally revealed a launch date for its first Adelaide store – and you won’t have to wait long.
The shop, located in the old Alchemy Ironworks on The Parade, Kent Town, will throw open its doors for the first time at 2pm on Monday.
Founded by SA brothers Nick and Danny Palumbo, Gelato Messina has grown from a single store in Sydney in 2002 to more than 30 across Australia.
Now the beloved dessert is coming to Adelaide, with the new shop featuring its signature 40-flavour gelato cabinet, including 35 classic flavours and five rotating weekly specials.
For the opening, there’s a new flavour called Welcome to Kent Town – custard tart gelato with tart base and iced coffee fudge.
Also available will be Messina’s jaw-dropping selection of gelato cakes, jars of house-made dulce de leche and some merchandise.
Founder and co-owner Nick Palumbo said it’s special to finally open a store in his hometown, at a corner location he used to pass by every day on the way to the city.
“My parents moved here from Messina in Sicily in 1968 and my brother Danny and I grew up in Adelaide in the 80s and 90s,” he said.
“We raised our young families here before moving to Sydney, so it feels pretty cool to be coming back to SA to finally bring the brand home.
“It took us a long time to find our perfect site, but when I saw Alchemy Works in Kent Town was for sale I knew it was the site for our first store.”
The Palumbo brothers have a history in hospitality, and began making gelato while working at the old Cafe Buongiorno in Rundle St.
Since then, they’ve developed a unique recipe for their silky-smooth gelato – never using pre-made bases or mass-produced flavour pastes.
Excitingly, a new Italian style eatery from Palumbo’s old friends Eugenio Maiale (Citrus and The Green Olive, Auge and A Tavola) and Claudio Ferraro (Cibo and Valentino’s) will sit alongside the gelato shop.
Originally from Adelaide, Maiale worked at the old Rigoni’s on Leigh St and launched Auge and Citrus, before moving to Sydney where he opened some of the city’s favourite Italian restaurants including A Tavola.
The restaurant name is still under wraps, but the menu will represent what Maiale and Ferraro love to eat while at home and on holidays: “freedom food with no rules”.
The businesses will share the same building, but it’s understood they will operate separately – with plenty of fun collaborations between them.
