A McLaren Vale wine has been named Best in Show at a prestigious worldwide awards in London – and best of all, it costs just $20 at Dan Murphy’s.

A $20 South Australian wine has won the coveted ‘Best in Show’ title at a prestigious world awards in London.

McLaren Vale’s Shingleback Wines won ‘Best in Show at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards for its grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre blend, Red Knot Classified GSM 2022.

Now in its 21st year, the international Decanter wine competition is respected for its rigorous judging process and world-class judge selection.

This year, more than 18,000 entries from 57 countries were tasted by 243 expert judges, including 61 Masters of Wine and 20 Master Sommeliers.

Of the 18,000-strong entrants, only 50 wines were selected to receive ‘Best in Show.’

Shingleback chief winemaker Mark Jamieson said of the win, “My aim with this wine was to create a GSM blend that brings together the best quality of each variety of the three different grapes – shiraz, grenache, and mourvèdre – to create a wine greater than the sum of all its parts.

“To be named ‘Best in Show’ at Decanter is a pinch-me moment for any winemaker,” Mr Jamieson said.

“It affirms that we’ve achieved what we set out to do with this wine and more.

“To win such a coveted award for this wine demonstrates the exceptional quality of fruit we have access to in McLaren Vale across all levels of our portfolio.

“This nod from Decanter is hugely gratifying and a proud moment in my career.”

The Red Knott wine, which is available for $20 from Dan Murphys, is a lighter-bodied red, described as having aromas of ripe strawberries, cherries and roses, with hints of chocolate.

The palate offers bright summer berry flavours, ripe tannins and layered complexity.

Other stand-out wineries from South Australia to win a prestigious ‘Best in Show’ title included Chaffey Bros in Eden Valley for its Evangeline Syrah 2021, which sells for $40, and Penny’s Hill Yeenunga McLaren Vale grenache 2023, which will set you back $100.

South Australia was the best-performing region with 30 top medals.

In total, Australia took home eight ‘Best in Show’ awards, the second best-performing country, following France.

Other Australian wineries that won the accolade included Fermoy, Lowestoft, and Stella Bella, cementing Australia’s status for producing outstanding quality wines.

Mr Jamieson thanked all his growers for their “meticulous” work and expertise behind the scenes to help the winery achieve the honour.
