While some teenagers are addicted to playing video games or using their mobile phone, young Carlo Capone was focused on just one thing: working his first job at a cafe.
“I just loved it. I became addicted to the place. I wanted to be there all the time,” said Carlo, who was just 13 when he started cleaning tables at St Louis dessert cafe in Mawson Lakes.
“I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
Fast forward three years and now the 16-year-old has partnered with his St Louis bosses, Andrea Bonvicin, 31, and Krista Souvertjis, 31, to open his own cafe, Franco’s Deli.
Also located in Mawson Lakes, the eatery will serve up paninis, focaccias, toasties, high quality coffee and a range of pastries.
“I’m really excited, a bit nervous as well, it’s all of the emotions,” said Carlo, who named the cafe after his great-grandfather, who died recently aged 98.
Currently in Year 11, Carlo is completing high school online, and has the blessing of his parents to start his first business.
“They were very shocked at first but they said, ‘If this is what you want to do, follow your heart’,” said Carlo, who works between 40-60 hours a week.
Despite his youth, the Parafield Gardens teenager said he’s ready for the increased responsibility.
“I want to be there every single minute we’re open. I love that at such a young age I can call something mine. It’s very special to me,” he said.
“Age is just a number. I’m just 16 but I can only give it a go. If we do right by the customers, we put happiness on the plate, then there’s no room for failure.
“I’m very confident, but we’ll see what happens.”
Franco’s Deli will open its doors within the next fortnight.
