“Beware Ogre” reads a rough wooden sign hammered into the ground outside a unique AirBNB in the Scottish Highlands.
It marks the barren, muddy front yard of a vacation rental tucked under the roots of a large tree stump.
The rental, located on the grounds of a 19th-century mansion called Ardverikie Estate, is a recreation of the swamp home of DreamWorks Animation’s character, Shrek.
The listing explains that the accommodation is a “mud-laden, moss-covered, murky-watered swamp” nearly 100 kilometres south of Inverness.
It’s like stepping into the film.
Inside, the space is rough and charming, with Shrek’s green armchair, a dining table with a pumpkin on a tray, and a bed made up with a patchwork-mended quilt. Tree roots poke through the ceiling.
There’s space for three guests, and anyone over age five is welcome.

Shrek’s swamp is on AirBNB
In spite of its location on a mansion estate, Shrek’s cabin isn’t luxury living, or even glamping. The toilet is 20 metres away from the main building.
There are plenty of natural attractions nearby: Cairngorms National Park, Loch Laggan or wandering around the estate which set some of the scenes from Outlander and The Crown.

Incredibly, the stay is free, but there’s a catch: the free rental is a one-off.
From October 13, hopefuls are to register their interest in a two-night swamp stay, which is scheduled for October 27 to 29.
In return for the free accommodation, AirBNB is pledging a donation to non-profit HopScotch Children’s Charity, an organisation that sends disadvantaged and vulnerable kids on vacation.

The vacation rental isn’t the only ogre-themed destination. Shrek, which won the Oscar for best animated feature in 2002 and inspired many sequels and spin-offs also has mini theme park in London called Shrek’s Adventure, complete with live shows, a magical flying bus and other immersive Shrek-themed experiences.
