Helping people through the “best day of their lives” is what drives John Middleton’s love for being a celebrant.

The owner of Middleton Events said being crowned South Australia’s best celebrant of 2024 – as voted by subscribers of The Advertiser – is something he’ll never forget.

“I feel really honoured and humbled … and proud,” he said.

Mr Middleton, 61, has been in the wedding industry for over 40 years after starting out as a mobile DJ in 1979 at only 16.

“I’ve basically been in the wedding industry all my life,” he said.

“I’ve done over 4000 weddings … business comes from word of mouth.”

The wedding enthusiast didn’t get into celebrancy until five years ago when he decided he could take his love for weddings that step further.

Now, he’s putting a fun and exciting twist on the traditional ceremony.

“I saw that they (weddings) needed an element of excitement,” he said.

“There’s a lot of engagement with friends and family.”

Mr Middleton said he makes it his mission to take the focus away from the couple at the beginning of the ceremony so they can take a moment to soak it all in and get comfortable.

“It’s very different to traditional weddings,” he said.

The respected celebrant said he loves being a part of people’s special days and doing all he can to make it that little bit better.

“I get to be with people for the best day of their lives,” he said.

“It’s an honour and a privilege.”
