With his curly red mane it was the boy from Roxby Downs to won the hearts of South Australians to take out The Advertiser’s annual Kid Mullet Cup.

Bryce Williamson rocks a mullet similar to Nicole Kidman’s from the 1983 BMX Bandits action movie.

But if you ask him, his mullet is better and pointed out his hair isn’t “so long on top”.

After seeing the striking resemblance, Bryce’s mum Liza Williamson said he’s “got superstar hair”.

When the six year old learnt he had claimed the Cup, he could not wipe the smile off his face.

Although he was a little shy and held onto his mum’s hand, Bruce did a celebratory shake of his mullet, whipping his head right and left.

Proud mum Ms Williamson said his mullet was an obvious contender with his bright locks standing out from the rest.

“It’s definitely the red hair and the curls and the character behind the hair … he’s just unique and he beats to his own drum,” she said.

“He’s cheeky but sweet, cute and shy and very clever.”

Ms Williamson said the benefit of living in a small town like Roxby was people look beyond the hair and know the person sporting the mullet rather than “bogan” stereotype.

“They (the mullets) can be a bit labelling but it’s a very tight-knit, close town, everyone knows everybody, and they all know Bryce,” she said.

“I know of the stereotypes, it’s just Australian boganism and that but Bryce is not a bogan. He loves cars, he loves motors and things like that but he’s a sweet, caring, little boy.”

Ms Williamson said the mullet was grown out of necessity as the youngster faced sensory sensitivity to clippers.

“The mullet started because Bryce doesn’t actually like haircuts very much, there are sensory issues with clippers and things like we can’t get him to sit still for them,” she said.

“We’re very big in this house with ‘it’s your body, your choice’ however, he does get a trim every now and again … but due to sensory stuff we just let him grow it.”

Ms Williamson said she was pleased Bryce’s school wasn’t strict on haircuts.

“Our school is very accepting of all and we’re very lucky to have the teachers that we have and the principal that we have,” Ms Williamson said.

“Our teachers will accept Bryce the way he is and then they work with other needs that he might require. We’re very lucky to have a great school.”
