The Advertiser’s annual Kid Mullet Cup 2024: See the 20 mullets in the lead

The results are gloriously close and there’s just hours to go . . . could your vote decide the winner?

Public voting has been fierce – and tight – in The Advertiser’s annual Kid Mullet Cup of 2024.

The votes are so close it’s anyone’s game. Will Bryce Williamson’s luscious red curls take out top spot? Or will Hamish Brown’s straight-up-and-down be the winner?

Six-year-old Bryce’s mum Liza says he’s been growing his mullet since age two and refuses to let anyone near his head with scissors.

Hamish’s mum Erin tells a similar story about her son’s refusal to cut his hair.

“He uses my hair oils and masks to keep it smooth and shiny for the girls,” she joked.

Both boys are currently ranking in the top 20 leading the votes from our 48 finalists.

But we should tell you it’s all very close with just a couple of votes separating some players.

So which is your favourite? It’s time to get those votes in!

‘I spend $2600 a year keeping my kids’ mullets filthy’

Among the other finalists in the running are brothers Ace Cox, 10, and Boston Cox, 3, from Christies Downs who have grown a mullet for most of their lives.

But their mother Kimberley Pelham has revealed the high costs of maintaining the long, blonde hair.

Ms Pelham said the hairstyle requires a lot of regular care and expenses.

“We probably spend $100 a fortnight just on haircuts but then there are other expenses too,” Ms Pelham said.

“You wouldn’t expect it but the cost of their mullets really adds up, especially if you want them to have a more well-kept look rather than scraggly.”

The mother of two said that aside from the hairdressers, she would treat the boys and their mullets to a luxury experience of hair masks or other treatment lotions.

Meanwhile, their regular hair routines include a blow dry with detangle or hair straighteners with heat protector.

But Ms Pelham said it’s her eldest child Ace who has gone to extreme measures to keep his long mullet.

“Ace actually did a colour run at school last year and got red dye in his hair, and I tried to strip it out and actually ended up bleaching his hair,” she said.

“So we ended up at the hairdressers for quite a few hours trying to correct my mistake and at the age of 10-years-old he ended up with a full head of foils.

“All because Ace refused to shave his mullet off.”

Ace now uses purple shampoo to stop his blonde hair from turning yellow.

Ultimately the experience is worth it as the boys get to bond over their mullets together.

“The boys get to go on a fortnightly trim with their dad and it’s a tradition that’s probably lasted the past six-years-and-a-bit,” the mum said.

“They go in for their haircut every Thursday and then they go out for dinner afterwards at the pub or something.

“And when they go out in public together, people always comment on both their hairstyles and say they look cute matching.”

Ms Pelham said it was beautiful to see her boys feel a connection over their haircuts and just wear something that suits their personalities so well.
