Cult bakery Abbots & Kinney has closed the doors on its western suburbs store, another in a string of casualties blamed on hospitality operations costs.
Opened in the former Red Door Bakery site at Croydon in 2019, the store was a bustling home for the bakery’s signature pastries and a favourite among locals.
Abbots & Kinney Managing Director Richard Wilson said he was grateful for the community’s support over the past five years.
“Unfortunately our time here has come to an end. Leases expiring, prices increasing … it’s something we’re hearing more and more often these days with lots of businesses being forced to make tough decisions,” Mr Wilson said.
The store’s last day of trade was June 13.
However, it’s not all sad news for lovers of the pastrymakers’ sweet and savoury treats – Mr Wilson said patrons could look forward to the imminent opening of a new store in the northeastern suburbs.
While the location remains under wraps, it will be the seventh location for the Abbots & Kinney brand with stores on Pirie St, King William St, UniSA, Malvern, West Lakes and North Tce.
In 2021, the bakery took out Delicious Local’s best cafe award — beating out dozens of bustling CBD cafes.
The closure announcement comes after popular takeaway-only pizza chain Hey Bianca quietly shut up shop this week, while owners of two landmark city pubs have also been listed for urgent sale.
