Australian Idol contestant Jaylena Heuskes was born for the stage – in more ways than one.
The 24-year-old’s mother, Adelaide DJ and singer Nikki Kosmider Heuskes, went into labour with Jaylena while performing at old city nightclub Heaven.
“She was playing Barbarella and went into labour,” Ms Heuskes said.
“Straight after her performance, she went to hospital and out I came.
“I was just meant to be on the stage. Music runs in the family.”
She was raised on a farm in the Adelaide Hills, and her stepfather, former Sydney, Port Adelaide and Brisbane star Adam Heuskes, is also no stranger to the limelight.
He played 125 AFL matches before retiring at the end of the 2000 season.
Ms Heuskes said both her parents had been very supportive.
“Everything I’ve done in music, they’ve had my back and they’ve been so generous,” she said.
After years showcasing her talents at venues around Adelaide and on her YouTube channel, Ms Heuskes said she was excited to be making her TV debut on Channel 7’s rebooted reality show on Monday.
“There’s a lot of nerves, but I just know it’s what I’m meant to be doing with my life,” said Ms Heuskes, who draws inspiration from performers such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Prince and Lady Gaga.
“It’s the right time to step into my talent as an artist.”
