Broadcaster Erin Molan has opened up about the “damaging” false accusation she was once involved with a married man while discussing extramarital affairs on-air this morning.

Molan was speaking about the topic with co-hosts Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee on 2Day FM’s The Morning Crew: Hughesy Ed and Erin when she opened up about a controversy from her own past.

“I’ve been accused of having an affair, six or seven years ago now. It was a false accusation, and I took legal action, because it was so offensive and so hurtful and so damaging,” she said.

“I felt at that time there was nothing you could accuse me of that could’ve been worse, being someone who would do that in terms of hurting people.”

Molan is referring to businessman Anthony Bell’s bitter 2017 court battle with ex-wife, former Getaway reporter Kelly Landry.

Molan found herself embroiled in the split when Landry told the court she had confronted her then-husband about what she claimed was his “odd” friendship with Molan.

She and Bell had met when she crew member on his yacht for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, and the pair had maintained a friendship.

Outside court, Molan said she had “never had an intimate relationship with Anthony Bell” and her name was being “unfairly dragged” into a messy marriage dispute.

Molan also choked back tears during an appearance on The Footy Show as she strongly denied anything inappropriate had taken place.

Later in 2017, she settled a defamation case against the Sydney Morning Herald out of court after the outlet claimed there had been “rumours” she and Bell were having an affair.

“It hasn’t been a particularly pleasant few months, but I had no choice in taking them on given what I do for a living and the kind of values I have. What they published was hurtful and defamatory, and it wasn’t true,” she told 9Honey at the time.

Speaking to her co-hosts today, Molan revealed she’d previously had a hardline attitude towards those who embarked upon extramarital affairs, but it had softened somewhat after an unnamed colleague had a “highly publicised” affair.

“He’s not a bad person, I know his wife really well, and there was almost this acceptance afterwards that it was almost the best thing that’d ever happened to their marriage.”

Still, Molan said, it wasn’t something she would ever do.

“I’ve been in relationships that are really miserable, and there’s no intimacy, and it’s a really horrible place to be. I’ve been there but I still wouldn’t take that step and didn’t take that step, even after years,” she said.

“I would end something before ever exploring intimacy with another person; it’s something I feel strongly about. I wouldn’t want to live with myself.”
