Dr Michael Mosley’s heartbreaking final interview before death

In one of Michael Mosley’s last interviews before his untimely death, the TV doctor shared his greatest hope for his future.

Doctor Michael Mosley cause of death revealed in autopsy

Doctor Michael Mosley said in one of his last interviews that he didn’t want to die before seeing his grandchildren grow up.

The British TV personality died of natural causes, according to an initial autopsy, after his body was found in a rocky area on the small Greek island of Symi on Sunday. He had been missing for four days.

The beloved 67-year-old presenter and father-of-four had vanished after embarking on a walk while on holiday. He’d waved goodbye to his wife of 37 years Clare Mosley on a nearby beach, before taking a wrong turn and ending up on an unforgiving two-hour trek in extreme heat.

Speaking to The Telegraph on April 30, Mosley talked about how eager he was to live a long and healthy life after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged 55, having lost his father Bill from complications related to diabetes at 74.

“I had seen what happened to my father,” Mosley told UK journalist Kerry Parnell.

“He hadn’t seen his grandkids grow up. I thought, that’s not a road I want to go down.”

Mosley, who managed to reverse his diabetes, said his diagnosis ultimately changed the course of his life, prompting him to overhaul his diet and write the best-selling book, The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet, which was released in 2015.

“That is what led me to write a book and pretty well everything that’s happened since,” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Dr Mosley - who has three adult sons and an adult daughter - was optimistic about his future, saying he had no intentions of slowing down.

“I’m 67 and a lot of my mates are now retired,” he said.

“Neither I nor Clare have any intention of giving up work. Why would you give up? Now in my mid-to-late 60s, I am quite happy to go on writing and giving public speeches and making telly and podcasts.”

It comes after details about Dr Mosley’s final moments were revealed in the initial autopsy, ruling he most likely died of natural causes at around 4pm last Wednesday, the same day he went missing.

Police sources told The Sun that early findings show Mosley sat down for a rest during his walk and lost consciousness before he died.

Dr Mosley’s body was discovered next to a fence near Agia Marina beach, about 30 minutes’ walk from the village of Pedi.

His corpse was discovered behind a fence by a bar manager, after the mayor of Symi reportedly “saw something” while scouring the coastline on a boat and notified staff.

“They called me, they said ‘You know what we saw something from far away, can you go and check’ so I went there,” Agia Marina bar manager Ilias Tsavaris told The Mirror.

“So when I walked up I saw something like a body to make sure.”

Dr Mosley’s wife, Dr Clare, confirmed his death in a statement.

“I don’t know quite where to begin with this,” she wrote.

“It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband.

“We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together. I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days.

“My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you.

“We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it.”

She continued, “He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.

“Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special.

“We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him.

“Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked. We’re also very grateful to the press who have dealt with us with great respect.

“I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael.”
